Chalk Door also in Beetlejuice!

I finally remembered! I kept trying to remember where I had seen the whole 'chalk door into the underworld' thing and it hit me. It was in Beetlejuice! Haha!

Anyway, I thought I'd share my amusement. I'm sure you can find references to it elsewhere. Since it managed to appear in both movies, I wouldn't be surprised if it were a more common magical device (like the mandrake root) that appears not infrequently.

It was funny, I watched Betelgeuse on VH1 (of all places!) just before I watched Pan's Labyrinth for the first time, and I was totally like "Woah! Chalk door!"

I wonder where this idea originated and where else one can find it?

Haha It totally reminded me of this absurd (and really embarassing) show I used to watch on Nickelodeon, "Chalkzone." It was all about a boy who found magic chalk and used it to create a magic portal to the place where all erased chalk drawings go. So bad...

Hey. I know there is a short story in Japanese by Kobo Abe called "The Magic Chalk" (1951) This may have been where it started. Its not as old as the Mandrake root, which is at least 1100 AD...

I figured this out because I was also trying to recall where the memory of a book with the instruction "draw a door" was from.
